Lesson 4: Crafting an Arrangement through Contrast

Crafting an Arrangement through Contrast

The distance between an eight bar loop and a full song can feel like a chasm. Closing that gap is a matter of perspective. So far, you've composed a complete eight to sixteen bar loop and a partial eight to sixteen bar loop. Up until now, you've been thinking entirely in terms of individual sections.

To arrive at a finished song, it's critical to begin thinking at the scale of a song. In this lesson, you'll learn how to take advantage of Ableton Live's Locators to begin slotting your existing sections into a larger form.

Making the Most of Energy

As that form emerges, so will gaps in the arrangement. In fillings those gaps, you want to think about the overall arc of the song: where do you want your piece to have the most energy? where do you want it to be simple? Complex? Defining these moments of contrast will help inform how each section should be completed.
